Police Promotion Testing and Consulting Services

To complement test development and administration, PROFILE includes a number of helpful services to the client.  These services include Grading, Appeals, Security, and Technical Assistance.

GRADING

Examinations are accompanied by a grading key for use by the department. However, Justex also provides an optional grading service for clients who desire grading by an impartial third party and more sophisticated analysis of test results. Scantron form answer sheets are provided with the test booklets and, once completed, are returned to Justex by the client department. Justex then scans the answer sheets and imports the grade data into a computer software program.  This allows Justex to produce a variety of valuable analytical reports for the client. Some reports are suitable for distribution to candidates as excellent sources of feedback on individual performance.

These reports include:

  • Three Roster Reports. One report shows rank order based on exam grade, one roster is sorted alphabetically, and the third roster is sorted by ID number, omiting the names. This latter report may be used for posting of scores when anonymity is desired.
  • The Student Test Reports are individual reports for each candidate's use. This report shows each question missed, the incorrect response for that question, and the correct response. These may be provided to the candidates.
  • The Individual Subtest Reports are also individual reports for the candidates, and show candidates how well they performed on each source used in the test.
  • The Subtest Class Report gives the same information as the Individual Subtest Reports but in aggregate format; it shows how well each candidate performed on each source. This report is for administrative use by the department.
  • The Subtest Class Summary Report, also for administrative purposes, shows the percentage of candidates who passed each individual source.
  • The Item Analysis Report provides an analysis of candidate performance on each individual question, and is for administrative use by the department.

APPEALS

With almost any test in almost any department, candidates who take the test will disagree with certain answers. In many departments, an appeal process will be in place, whereby the candidate can formally express disagreement (appeal) in writing.

Justex will respond in writing within five working days to the 20 most appealed questions forwarded by the client department. The Justex response is designed to be taken into account by the civil service board, arbiter, or committee which hears appeals. Justex presents a recommendation as to the correctness of the question and the accuracy of the appeal, which may be considered by the decision-making body reviewing appeals.

This service is included in the base cost of the examination. If the examination is challenged in court, Justex will appear on behalf of the client, at an additional daily charge.

SECURITY

Every precaution for security and confidentiality is taken during the development, production, and delivery of the examinations. Test booklets are individually sealed and numbered. Shipments are inventoried. Test materials are kept under lock and key in Justex offices. Tests are sent only to a pre-determined agency point of contact, in a double-sealed package. Shipments are sent to a physical address and always by means which may be tracked. Test materials are normally delivered approximately five days before the scheduled examination date and are returned following completion of the appeals process.

TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE

Justex Systems, Inc. is available to answer questions and provide assistance to client agencies at each step of the process, whenever necessary. This may be particularly important if an agency has not traditionally conducted a written examination or has not used an examination provided from outside the department. Based on its long experience, Justex will provide carefully considered advice on such decisions as selection of test sources (reading list), how much time should be allotted for the test, how best to review the preview (we provide a checklist), and many other questions. We are available for consultation from start to finish.
